Counseling for individuals, families and couples

How long does the process usually take?

You and I will decide that together.  Sometimes, you'll reach your goals in six or eight sessions; in other situations, it may be many months.  Often, after a few sessions, I'll have a rough idea how long it will take to get where you'd like to go.

What can I expect in my first therapy appointment?

Before we meet,  I'll have you fill out forms to assess your situation, so I'll have a bit of a background snapshot of you.  Once you come into my office, you have a seat on a comfortable couch and we'll discuss what brings you to therapy.  I'll get your history, and you'll begin to tell me your story, sharing as much or as little as you like.  The first visit is primarily for you and I to get to know each other, and to discuss how to move forward from there.

What can I do to get ready for therapy?

Imagine yourself at the end of your time in therapy.  How are you different?  This is a good place to begin thinking about the specific changes you'd like to make.

What can I realistically expect to get out of therapy?

Therapy gives you the tools to evolve your circumstances for the better.  If you are an active participant in your therapy, you can expect to feel stronger and more self-aware.  Your thoughts have a lot to do with how you feel, so turning unhealthy thinking around can bring you to a more balanced, realistic life.

What about medication?

Sometimes, medication isn't needed.  Sometimes, it can help.  If you'd like, I can discuss the pros and cons of medication with you.  If you are interested in medication, or if you are currently on medication, I can refer you to a psychiatrist or a psychopharmacologist where you can discuss details of types and dosages, to make sure you're on the right track.

Do you accept insurance?

I'm a provider for many insurance companies.  Give me a call if you'd like to ask specific questions about insurance.
